Community and Youth Engagement
Saturday, 5 September 2026
On Saturday, 5 September 2026, the CDF Youth came together for a vibrant and meaningful Youth BBQ, bringing young people and members of the community together for a day of fellowship, networking, sharing ideas and strengthening the bonds that unite us. What appeared to be a simple social gathering was much more than just food and entertainment; it was an opportunity for young people to connect, build relationships and reflect on the important issues affecting our communities and the future of Zimbabwe.
I was honoured to be part of the catering team for the CDF Youth BBQ. Working alongside other members of the team, I helped contribute to the preparation, organisation and serving of food throughout the event. Being part of the catering team was a rewarding experience because it allowed me to serve others while working together with fellow members to ensure that everyone felt welcome and enjoyed the day. It reminded me that successful community events depend on teamwork, commitment and the willingness of individuals to contribute in whatever way they can.
The gathering also provided an important space to reflect on the ongoing national conversation surrounding Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3) and what constitutional changes mean for ordinary citizens, particularly young people. The debate around CAB3 has raised important questions about constitutionalism, democratic participation, governance, presidential power, elections and accountability. These are not issues that should be left only to politicians or political institutions. They directly affect the future of young Zimbabweans and therefore deserve informed discussion and meaningful youth participation.
The CDF Youth BBQ demonstrated why young people need spaces where they can come together, exchange views and become more informed about the issues affecting their country. Regardless of political differences, young people should be encouraged to understand their constitutional rights, participate peacefully in civic affairs, ask questions and hold leaders and institutions accountable. The future of Zimbabwe belongs to its people, and young people must have a meaningful voice in conversations about the direction of the country.
The discussions surrounding CAB3 also highlight the importance of protecting democratic values and ensuring that citizens are able to express their opinions freely and peacefully. Young people should not be discouraged from participating in national affairs. Instead, they should be empowered with knowledge, encouraged to engage responsibly and given opportunities to contribute to the development of their communities and country.
Beyond the political and constitutional discussions, the BBQ was a beautiful demonstration of unity and community spirit. People came together to share food, laughter, conversations and experiences. Such gatherings are important because they create stronger relationships and remind us that, despite our different backgrounds and opinions, we can still come together around common values and a shared desire for a better future.
For me personally, being part of the catering team made the day even more special. Serving and supporting others may seem like a small contribution, but every role matters when building a successful community event. I was proud to contribute my time, energy and skills alongside others who were equally committed to making the occasion a success.
The CDF Youth BBQ on 5 September 2026 was therefore not simply a day of food and socialising. It was a celebration of youth, unity, community and civic engagement. It demonstrated the importance of young people coming together, supporting one another and remaining engaged with the issues that shape their present and future.
As the conversation around CAB3 and Zimbabwe’s democratic future continues, the message from the youth should remain clear: our voices matter, our future matters, and young people must be part of the conversation about the Zimbabwe we want to build.
CDF Youth — united in community, courageous in voice and committed to a better future.
